Transportation Fund for Climate Protection: AB 2558

An incredible 50% of the Bay Area’s greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation. Even with  cleaner fuels and more efficient cars, California's transportation emissions are expected to grow because of our growing dependence on cars, trucks and airplanes for so many trips.

That's why TALC is supporting AB 2558, co-authored by Assembly Member Jared Huffman, a long-time leader on environmental issues, and Assembly Member Mike Feuer, a champion of public transportation. The bill would give Los Angeles’ Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Bay Area’s Metropolitan Transportation Commission the authority to work with stakeholders to develop climate protection program proposals, and bring it to voters. Note: While the legislation gives both Los Angeles and the Bay Area this authority, each region would pursue their fees separately.

AB 2558 would give the Bay Area the option of either developing a climate mitigation fee on gasoline of up to 3% or assessing a vehicle registration fee based on the vehicle’s emissions (not to exceed $90 per year per vehicle). Your voice incredibly important because lobbyists from the oil industry, auto dealers, and the California Chamber of Commerce turned out in force against the bill at the committee vote.
